Managing Pain and Mobility in Older Age: Advice from Dr. Sawssan

 

On this International Day of Older Persons, we are reminded of the importance of caring for our seniors and addressing the changes that naturally come with aging. With age, the body experiences wear and tear, joints may become stiffer, muscles weaker, and balance less steady. However, with the right lifestyle and care, older adults can maintain independence, reduce pain, and improve their quality of life.

Here are some key recommendations for our elderly community:

 – Stay Active, Gentle exercises such as walking, swimming, stretching, or light strengthening routines help maintain mobility and reduce stiffness.

 – Protect Your Joints, Avoid sudden, heavy movements. Use supportive chairs, good shoes, and assistive devices if necessary.

– Focus on Balance, Simple balance training can prevent falls, which are one of the most common risks as we age.

– Manage Pain Wisely, Don’t ignore chronic back, knee, or neck pain. Physiotherapy, massage, and safe manual techniques can bring relief and prevent complications.

– Healthy Lifestyle, Adequate sleep, hydration, and a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D all support healthy bones and muscles.
